چکیده

INTRODUCTION Despite the high prevalence of tendon injuries, the etiology of tendon rupture is poorly understood. Degeneration due to cumulative microtrauma resulting from overuse has been widely discussed as a major contributor to tendon failure. However, existing biomechanical models of fatigue have largely focused on the relationship between the applied stress and the number of cycles to failure (Wang et al, 1995), identifying stiffness loss as an index of damage. The purpose of the present study was to assess alternate parameters as indices of mechanistic, sub-rupture changes that may underlie the tendon fatigue process.

Biomechanical and structural response of healing Achilles tendon to fatigue loading following acute injury.

Achilles tendon injuries affect both athletes and the general population, and their incidence is rising. In particular, the Achilles tendon is subject to dynamic loading at or near failure loads during activity, and fatigue induced damage is likely a contributing factor to ultimate tendon failure. Unfortunately, little is known about how injured Achilles tendons respond mechanically and structu...

On the Use of Acoustic Emission and Digital Image Correlation for Welded Joints Damage Characterization

A series of tests have been conducted to investigate fatigue damage characterization in corroded welded steel plates using structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques. Acoustic Emission (AE) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) technique with potential applications for locating and monitoring fatigue cracks in service. In the present work, AE is implemented to characterize damage during crack e...

Finite element analysis of fatigue damage in passenger-car diesel engine cylinder head under cyclic thermo-mechanical loadings

In this article, the thermo-mechanical fatigue lifetime of the cylinder head of a passenger-car diesel engine has been estimated. At the first stage, stress and strain distributions in the cylinder head have been calculated using the two-layer visco-plastic model, available in the ABAQUS software. The calibration of the model was performed, using correlating of simulated hysteresis curves and l...

Functionally distinct tendon fascicles exhibit different creep and stress relaxation behaviour

Most overuse tendinopathies are thought to be associated with repeated microstrain below the failure threshold, analogous to the fatigue failure that affects materials placed under repetitive loading. Investigating the progression of fatigue damage within tendons is therefore of critical importance. There are obvious challenges associated with the sourcing of human tendon samples for in vitro a...

Fatigue Failure and Damage Analysis of an Anti-roll Bar Subjected to Fatigue Experiments

The available fatigue theories have been examined using simple specimens subjected to bending or tension-compression loads. Therefore, the stress fields have been generally one or two dimensional. Anti-roll bar is a component belongs to the suspension system of the vehicles. In spite of having simple circular section, due to the having several curvatures, this component experiences a three-dime...
